When we were looking for interesting images to inspire a new card for our Enchanting Animals collection, we were attracted immediately by a striking image of a bat. The bat on the new Saturn Press card has his back to us and looks intently at something in the distance. With his wings spread out and his claws gripped tight, we can imagine his imminent flight. What grace and mystery this little bat encapsulates. Alone against a threatening night sky, such quiet majesty existing in such a small night creature.
When did bats become the unwelcome visitor of the night sky? Who decided that bats were ominous and dangerous?
When I read Janell Cannon's children's book Stellaluna to my granddaughter, I was thrilled to see that Stellaluna, the little bat, is portrayed positively. Stellaluna becomes separated from her mother and finds her way to a nest of birds, who take her in until she can be reunited with her mother. The birds and Stellaluna are portrayed as having behaviors that are neither good nor bad, just unique to them. The book ends with the conclusion that despite their differences, they remain good friends.
Saturn Press asks you to look at our little bat with a fresh perspective. We hope you enjoy his brave flight as much as we do.
