René Allenbach

Equinox:

René Allenbach (1889–1958) was a German painter and engraver known for his landscapes and depictions of rural life. His works often featured scenes from Alsace, including timber-framed houses, castles, and natural landscapes. Saturn Press's card Equinox is inspired by an Allenbach painting that depicts gracefully shaped trees set against a sky full of swirling clouds. It is a painting that conveys the vitality and mystery that greet the changing seasons.

In addition to rural scenes, one of the most important sites that Allenbach returned to again and again is the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral.

From 1905-1910, René Allenbach studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg, where he trained in the illustration department. This period was instrumental in shaping his expertise in engraving and lithography. In 1926, he married Louise-Caroline Hammann, who supported his art and often served as a model for his works. Although the region of Alsace was especially significant to Allenbach's painting, he and his wife travelled throughout France and Germany for inspiration.

Today, René Allenbach's paintings can be viewed at Musée Westercamp in Wissembourg, Alsace. If you happen to be in Alsace in the Spring of 2025, a retrospective of his work will be on show from May 10 to May 18.
